Smoked Salt Lemonade — BBQ mocktail | The Rub Kitchen
Lemonade is the most underrated BBQ drink. Add a pinch of smoked sea salt and you have a mocktail that seamlessly complements the smoky flavors of the grill — without alcohol, but with character. Easy to make for large groups.
Smoked Salt Lemonade — Recipe
For 6–8 people (large pitcher):
- 6 fresh lemons (or 4 lemons + 2 limes for more freshness)
- 6–8 tbsp sugar or honey to taste
- 1 liter cold water
- 500 ml sparkling water
- ½ tsp smoked sea salt
- Ice cubes and fresh mint for garnish
Preparation: Squeeze the lemons. Mix lemon juice with sugar and stir until dissolved (or make a sugar syrup by dissolving sugar with a little warm water). Add cold water. Taste and adjust. Add smoked sea salt — start with ¼ tsp and add more to taste. Fill with sparkling water just before serving. Serve over ice with fresh mint.
Variations
- Ginger Lemonade — add 2 cm grated fresh ginger when squeezing — spicy and fresh
- Hibiscus Lemonade — steep dried hibiscus blossoms in hot water, let cool, and mix with lemonade — deep pink and floral
- Mint Cucumber Lemonade — blend fresh mint and cucumber along — ultra-fresh with Mediterranean BBQ
- Alcoholic version — add gin or vodka to the base recipe for a homemade gin lemonade
Why smoked salt with lemonade?
Salt enhances sweetness and suppresses bitterness — that's why a pinch of salt works in lemonade. Smoked salt adds a subtle smoky flavor that suits the BBQ atmosphere without overdoing it. The same reasoning as a smoked sea salt rim on a margarita.
